The Wailuku Hongwanji Mission on Maui holds a special tradition each year called Obon Mairi. This isn't a large festival with food and dancing, but a quieter observance focused on honoring ancestors. "Obon Mairi" translates to "Obon visiting," and during this time, Reverend Murakami visits the homes of Wailuku Hongwanji Kyodan members.
If you're a member of the Kyodan congregation, you can expect a visit from Reverend Murakami to pay respects to your ancestors. To schedule a visit, contact Reverend Murakami directly or reach out to the mission office.
It's important to note that this observance is specifically for Kyodan members. However, the Wailuku Hongwanji Mission does hold a separate Obon Festival later in the summer. This lively event features traditional Bon Odori dancing, taiko drumming, and delicious food booths - a great way to experience Japanese culture and celebrate Obon with the community.
