Uniquely curated for Bellagio by Ralph DeLuca, “ICONS of Contemporary Art” showcases multifaceted works from living artists who challenge and evolve known paradigms of our time and redefine what it means to be iconic. Celebrating unconventional approaches to form and the body, the works of George Condo, Ghada Amer, and Sanford Biggers demonstrate their artistic mastery of material and representation. Loose, dripping threads; curving forms; distorted features, each of their works, while conceptually dissimilar, explore human existence through their own unique perspectives. Both Yoshitaka Amano and Haas Brothers specialize in distorting reality by creating playful creatures with dramatic bodies of fantastical proportions. Cast metal works by Sherrie Levine challenge the history of sculpture through questioning the authorship of imagery and conceptual content. Documenting and honoring women’s cultural work, Esther Mahlangu’s vibrant geometric Ndebele paintings and Gina Beavers’ perfectly rendered drawings elevate modes of ceremonial decoration and mundane beautification by chronicling the temporary practices of feminine labor. Abstracting built environments, Frank Stella and Rashaad Newsome examine the relationship between community, architecture, and histories of exclusion and destruction. Each artist, vastly different and iconic in their own right, converges in an exciting, microcosmic survey of preeminent art.
