On Saturday, August 2, 2025, the world marks the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Monterey County branch of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) invites the community to gather at Lovers Point Cove in Pacific Grove, CA, for a moving and inclusive ceremony. This event honors those who suffered and continue to suffer from the bombings of 1945 and reaffirms a global commitment to abolishing nuclear weapons, ensuring such a tragedy is never repeated.

Program Schedule
• 7:00 pm: Lantern making and Taiko Drumming
• 7:45 pm: Music and messages of hope and peace
• 8:15 pm: Launching of the Peace Lanterns on the water

Details
This is a free public event that is respectful, inclusive, and free of cultural appropriation. Kayaks will be provided by Pacific Grove Adventures to help launch lanterns across the water. The evening includes traditional Japanese Taiko drumming, live music, poetry, and meditative flute music during the lantern release. The ceremony emphasizes peace and reflection.
