On Sunday, May 29th, 1:30 PM, the Okinawa Association of America (OAA) in Gardena will host an event focusing on health and longevity in Okinawa. The presentation will be in English and Japanese. RSVP is required.
Titled "Okinawan Longevity: 'Nuchigusui' Spirit and Learning from our Grandparents," the presentation is based on Okinawan practices like "nuchigusui" (food as medicine) and "hachi hachi bu" (eating until you're 80% full) as well the lecturer's own research and interviews with Okinawan elders.
Guest lecturer Noriko Shimoji Cuaron is a Registered Nurse (RN) with a Master Degree in Public Health (MPH). She and the Okinawa Prefectural College of Nursing are currently coordinating a nurses gathering at this year's Worldwide Uchinanchu Festival (October 26 - 30 in Naha, Okinawa).
Shimoji Cuaron will also moderate a short discussion with elder OAA members about how they stay healthy and active.
This event is part of an ongoing series of educational programs at the OAA. Admission is free for current OAA members and $5 for non-members. RSVP is required: [email protected] or 310-532-1929. The OAA is located at 16500 S. Western Ave., Gardena 90247 (in the Yamauchi Building).
