In today's world of architecture of flashy images and empty spectacles, Kengo Kuma's designs of sensitive modesty provide a refreshing alternative. Lectures and discussion by Professor Botond Bognar and Kengo Kuma himself explore the architecture in depth, surrounding Kuma's first public project in the United States-the Cultural Crossing project now under construction at the Portland Japanese Garden.
First, Professor Bognar provides an overview by examining the way in which Kuma's buildings acquire authenticity by weaving intensive yet intimate relationships with both the environment and humans-gaining identity by weakening it. Following this, Kengo Kuma adds his personal insight into the inspiration behind the Cultural Crossing design. Together, the lectures investigate Kuma as an heir to Japanese traditions-aiming to dissolve the boundaries between architecture and the world at large.
Randy Gragg, former editor of Portland Monthly and a noted observer of Portland's architectural scene, moderates the subsequent discussion between the speakers and the community.
Located in the Portland Art Museum's Fred & Suzanne Fields Ballroom.
