Interested in Japanese Kabuki theatre? Join us for a special Halloween-themed class focusing on a video of the Kabuki dance drama, "The Demon Spider" (Kumo no Hyoushimai).

The commander Minamoto Yorimitsu has been sent to an ancient, deserted place with his four faithful retainers to investigate reports of strange apparitions. Suddenly, a beautiful woman appears in the form of a professional dancer, seeming to be in love with him. At last, one of the men warns that, despite appearing to be a charming woman, by the light of torch flames she casts a strange shadow that resembles a spider.... (synopsis:http://www.kabuki21.com/kumo_no_hyoshimai.php)

The play features an all-star cast in one of Kabuki's spookiestdance dramas, just in time for Halloween! Preceded by the short stage scene, "The Danmari at Otowa Peak," featuring the first appearance on stage by Fujima Taiga, the three-year-old son of Kabuki actor Onoe Shoroku.

In Japanese with English translation. Class is free and open to the public. Feel free to bring snacks. All ages welcome!

If you are curious about why Kabuki's unique combination of drama, music, dance, and spectacle continues to entertain millions every year, "here's your chance to see one of the finest Kabuki films ever made, free, amongst fans and experts who will gladly fill you in on all the social and historical aspects of the performance" (Flavorpill "Editor's Pick").
