The Japanese Garden in Van Nuys welcomes visitors to one of the most notable Japanese gardens in America. A peaceful oasis in the midst of the busy San Fernando Valley, Suiho-en or "Garden of Water and Fragrance" is a six-and-a-half acre cultural showplace created by world-renowned art and architecture historian, Dr. Koichi Kawana.
Our volunteer program offers a wide selection of opportunities to serve the Garden and its mission. Volunteers may elect to be a part of one or more of the categories below:
Docents: Our team of trained Docents lead tours which inform the public about the Garden and water reclamation process.
Gift Shop: Our gift shop is operated solely by volunteers who process visitor admissions and sell a variety of merchandise. We need motivated staff for weekdays and Sundays. Previous sales experience is helpful, but not necessary.
Tea Service: Garden volunteers provide a Tea Service (tea and cookies) to the public for a small fee at special events and, generally, on the second and fourth Sunday of each month.
Special Events: The Garden is a wonderful location for cultural events, civic gatherings and other special events. Volunteers are needed for all areas of the program and this is a perfect volunteer opportunity for someone with a busy schedule.
