Race Preview (Indycar.com)
This is the 12th event at Kentucky Speedway. The driver that won the Kentucky race has won the championship three times (Buddy Lazier, 2000; Sam Hornish Jr., 2006; Scott Dixon, 2008).
In 2010, Helio Castroneves used fuel strategy to overcome a stout field and beat pole sitter Ed Carpenter. Dan Wheldon was third and Tony Kanaan was fourth. There were 11 lead changes among seven drivers. Box score
In 13 seasons, two drivers have won the 15th race of the season and also won the championship: Dan Wheldon won at Chicagoland in 2005 and Sam Hornish Jr. won at Texas 2 in 2002.
Fun fact
Construction program at the speedway increases seating capacity to 106,000, along with additional camping spots and ammenities.
Track Description
The 1.5-mile D-shaped oval has led to exciting racing year in and year out with its sweeping turns (14 degrees banking) and wide (70 feet) racing surface. The speedway has undergone a makeover since October 2010, adding seats and camping spaces. The lone difference to the racetrack is moving the pit lane closer to the main grandstand.
