Dr. Tom Elias, former Director of the U.S. national Arboretum in Washington D.C., and author of Japanese and Chinese Chrysanthemum Stones, traces the root of bonsai back to its origin in China, and describes how dwarf trees in a pot reached Japan and developed today`s modern bonsai.

Dr. Tom Elias is a botanist, writer and popular lecturer.� He served as Director of the U.S. National Arboretum and in the Senior Executive Service in the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington D.C. for 16 years before devoting full-time to studying and writing about Asian Arts, especially penjing, bonsai and stone appreciation.� Tom worked closely with the Chinese Academy of Forestry to design a classical Chinese garden that will be built in Washington D.C.� He is the author. co-author and editor of seven books and 135 scientific or popular science papers.� His latest book Chrysanthemum Stones, The Story of Stone Flowers is the first book in the English language about these beautiful Chinese and Japanese stones.� Tom has also published over 30 papers about bonsai, penjing and stone appreciation.� He is presently preparing a new book about contemporary stone appreciation in China.
