Citadel Outlets
Event Location
Los Angeles, CA 90040
Background
The Citadel opened in November 1990 and included a retail outlet center, a food court, five office buildings, and a 201-room Wyndham Hotel.
The Citadel Outlets were the first factory outlets in Los Angeles.
The Citadel started as a tire and rubber company plant during the depression in the 1930s. It was modeled after a 7th Century B.C. ancient Assyrian palace to convey strength. The 1,750 foot concrete wall is decorated with heraldic griffins and bas-reliefs of Babylonian princes carved into the stone between massive pillars and towers. There are also winged guardian figures and winged bulls with human heads meant to guard against evil.
Movie fans will recognize The Citadel wall and building as a backdrop used in the movie Ben-Hur (1959) starring Charlton Heston.
