The Nichi Bei Foundation is a non-profit organization that was established in 1899. The foundation has a rich history rooted in the Japanese American community and aims to preserve and promote the cultural heritage and history of Japanese Americans in the United States.

Originally known as the 'Nichi Bei Shimbun' or 'Japanese American News,' the foundation began as a Japanese-language newspaper based in San Francisco, California. It served as a vital source of information and community connection for Japanese immigrants and their descendants in the United States. The newspaper covered a wide range of topics, including news from Japan, local events, cultural features, and community issues.

During World War II, with the internment of Japanese Americans by the U.S. government, the newspaper was forcibly discontinued. However, after the war, the Nichi Bei Foundation revived the publication in 1946, continuing its mission to provide a voice for the Japanese American community.

Over the years, the foundation expanded its scope beyond journalism. It engaged in various cultural and educational initiatives to raise awareness about Japanese American history, promote intercultural understanding, and support community projects. The Nichi Bei Foundation has organized exhibitions, workshops, lectures, and cultural events to celebrate Japanese American heritage and foster dialogue among diverse communities.

In addition to its historical focus, the Nichi Bei Foundation has been active in contemporary issues affecting the Japanese American community. It has covered topics such as redress and reparations for Japanese Americans who were interned during World War II, civil rights, social justice, and the challenges faced by immigrant communities.

The foundation has also embraced digital platforms to reach a wider audience. In recent years, it has transitioned from a print publication to an online format, allowing for broader accessibility and engagement.

Through its multifaceted approach, the Nichi Bei Foundation continues to serve as a bridge between generations and cultures, preserving the legacy of Japanese Americans while advocating for a more inclusive society.
